Oceans Day Oceans Day, June 8th, is a time to remember the life-giving role of oceans worldwide. This international celebration, declared a decade ago at the United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, has grown from a ripple into a tidal wave of awareness about the importance of our oceans.
This year's Oceans Day theme is "Watersheds! your link to Canada's oceans...explore the connection!". The theme emphasizes our connection to the ocean, no matter where we live - inland or by the coast. By exploring and discovering our links to the oceans, we learn how closely connected each of us are to the ocean. What we do in our backyard and community can have a positive or negative affect on our oceans. Water travels from our oceans to the atmosphere to land and back to our oceans again. Water resources are limited, and all of the water now present on Earth is all there is. Protection of our oceans starts with the protection of our watersheds, and protection of our watersheds starts with you!
Environment Awards
Every step we take as individuals adds up to big benefits for our environment. Some Canadians go above and beyond in their efforts to make a difference. These exceptional people are honoured at the Canadian Environment Awards Gala on June 5, during a special reception, dinner, and ceremony for the finalists of the awards. This year's gala will be held in Vancouver, British Columbia.
