Energy Conservation
Energy conservation is a key component of achieving emission reduction targets and is an area in which everyone in society can contribute. There are various programs available to the people of Saskatchewan so that they can do their part to become more environmentally friendly.
Go Green energy conservation programs include:
Saskatchewan EnerGuide for Houses - The EnerGuide for Houses program provides homeowners with valuable advice on how to improve the comfort and efficiency of their home. Through this program Saskatchewan residents are eligible to receive a grant for energy efficient upgrades they make. The maximum retrofit grant you can receive from both federal and provincial sources is a combined total of $10,000. Saskatchewan EnerGuide for Houses is administered by SaskEnergy on behalf of the province, and in cooperation with the Government of Canada.
Energy Efficient Rebate for New Homes - The Energy Efficient Rebate for New Homes is a program that provides incentives to Saskatchewan residents who are currently building or planning to build an energy efficient home that is either ENERGY STAR qualified or R-2000 certified. These homes are built to an EnerGuide 80 standard.
The program helps offset the cost premium that can be associated with building an energy efficient home. New homeowners are eligible to receive up to $2,400 in rebates ($1,000 for the purchase of an ENERGY STAR qualified or R-2000 certified home, $1,000 for the installation of a solar domestic hot water heating system, $150 for the installation of a drain water heat recovery system and $100 for the installation of one qualifying natural gas appliance or $250 for two qualifying natural gas appliances).
Expanded Municipal Energy Efficiency Initiative - Municipalities may quality for funding for energy efficient upgrades to their facilities. The maximum amount of reimbursement funding that is available in any one fiscal year (April 1 to March 31) is $100,000 per municipality. Any municipality may qualify for one or more of the following programs under this initiative:
Energy Efficient Lighting Program - Funding for one-time lighting retrofits per building is available. Up to 25% of the cost may be eligible for reimbursement under this initiative based on the on site visit and facility report recommendations by the Saskatchewan Research Council.
Energy Efficient Heating Program - Up to $1000 is available for the replacement of existing forced air heating systems with Energy Star condensing furnaces with high-efficiency, electrically commutated DC fan motors and $1200 is available for high-efficiency boilers.
Demand Side Management (DSM) for Rinks - Funding is available for 25% of the installation of specified electrical demand side management devices that reduce electrical energy usage and costs.
Solar Water Heating Initiative for Today (SHIFT) - This reimbursement will match the federal ecoENERGY for Renewable heat initiative and be the lesser amount of 25 per cent of eligible solar water heating project costs (40 per cent in reomte communities) or $80,000.
Farm Energy Audit Program - This program will assist farmers and ranchers in a review of how they use energy in their operations and look for ways to reduce costs, improve energy efficiency and reduce impacts on the environment. Two different types of audit are being considered: a General Farm Audit of non-ventilated buildings (e.g. garage and shop) and farm operations, and an audit for Ventilated Livestock Buildings. Details on this audit program will be available in the Spring of 2008.
